Sydney Sweeney came under fire online after her attempt at a German accent in Eden.
The actress stars in Ron Howard’s new historical thriller, which premiered on Prime Video.
The Aphoria star’s performance quickly became the center of attention for the wrong reasons.
In the film, Sweeney plays Margaret Witmer, a real-life German woman who moves to the island of Floriana with her husband in the 1930s.
The story follows a group of settlers searching for paradise, only to encounter jealousy and chaos instead.
Despite a cast that included Anna D’Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law, it was Sweeney’s accent that dominated the online conversation.
Viewers flooded social media with memes and jokes, calling his tone “cruel” and “painful to listen to”.
“She drops the accent halfway through the movie, then brings it back, it’s like a parody,” one person wrote.
Others questioned why the film was in English if most of the characters were supposed to be German settlers.
However, some compared it to Lady Gaga’s tone in House of Gucci.
Director Ron Howard defended the creative choice, saying the film was meant to explore human nature and survival.
Still, this did little to quiet the criticism, as clips of Sweeney’s performance quickly spread online.
This came shortly after another controversy, where the actress was called out for her comments about the clothing reveal.
now, Eden Trending not for its story but for Sweeney’s tone, which has turned the film into a viral talking point.
