Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, was described as “entitled” to a family member.
The 32-year-old, who has had a long battle with addiction, is said to have wanted to “live a life that doesn’t exist.”
Now accused of killing his parents, he entered rehab more than 18 times at the age of 22.
Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Nick was arrested the same night.
He was charged with two counts of first degree murder.
On December 17, when he appeared in court, his lawyer did not file any charges. The trial will continue on January 7.
A source close to the family also said People that Rob and Michele felt “huge guilt” about their inability to help Nick completely change his life.
In 2015, Nick wrote Being Charliea film based on his struggles, directed by Rob, hoping to build his confidence and give him a sense of direction.
Nick also once spoke about the lack of recognition caused by drug use and growing up in the shadow of his famous father and grandfather, Carl Reiner, who died in 2020.
The Reiners, who had two other children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, were described as a tight-knit family who tried everything to support Nick through his difficulties. Rob also has a daughter, Tracy, 61, from a previous relationship.
The case remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
