Lizzy Caplan reflects on the long road she took to land her role in Jannis Ian’s Girls.
Conversations with Penn Xoolgy PodcroshThe 43-year-old actress revealed how she was decided to be part of the film – and how she came close to losing the role in the end.
Caplan explained that the calculation process was “very, very long,” and that it was immediately tied to the text.
“It was just the most interesting text I’ve ever read,” she said. “I wanted to be in it so bad. I fought so hard and then it worked.”
Before Jannis was cast, Caplan said that she, like everyone else, had to read for one of the two leading roles.
“Everybody had to take, I think, one of the two biggest people [roles]: Cady, Lindsay Lohan The part, or the part of Rachel McHAM, “she shared, noting that the casting of the actors was then separated by the recovery courses.
Even then, she faced resistance. “I went in and they insisted on throwing me out,” Caplan recalled. “Someone reminded me of this recently: the studio wanted Kelly Osbourne to play that role.”
Determined to prove that Jannis was trapped, Caplan went a step further. With the help of a Canadian hairstylist friend, she was transforming herself to match the anesthesia of the character.
“We went to Hollywood Boulevard and put on a dark dream of something just to send a screen shot of me looking like a kid,” she said.
Her persistence finally paid off. “I don’t remember how long that process was, but I remember getting the phone call and where I was when I got the phone call,” Caplan shared.
“How many times has that really happened to you in your work: that you just want to celebrate and nothing else?”
