How Rob Reiner became family to Billy Crystal

The combination of Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner spans almost 50 years. Over the years, the two actors and directors have collaborated on several projects, including All the Family, Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally, among others.

But nearly 50 years of friendship came to a tragic end when Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were murdered in their Brentwood home.

Even more shocking, their youngest son, Nick Reiner, was arrested for their murder. Based on that, a neighbor of the murdered couple saw Billy near the couple’s home, describing to ABC 7 that he “looked like he was going to cry.”

Rob and Billy’s friendship dates back to 1976, and at one point, the director revealed that he had second thoughts about casting the latter in When Harry Met Sally because of their connection.

“Whenever you do something personal, and you’re best friends, if it doesn’t work, it’s like, ‘Oy!’ ” he recalled.

“Finally, I said, ‘Aw, f– it; he’s perfect!’ The biggest laugh in any movie I’ve ever done was the line Billy came up with: ‘I’ll get what she’s got’.”
