Lee Lee said that his films and his students will define his legacy.
The winner of the Oscar, who is 68, issued a statement about the intentions of the 8th Alliance of Black Cinema and Television.
“It’s two things: a movie, and also a teacher,” Lee said People.
Lee, a longtime professor at Nyu School of the Arts, said teaching has become more meaningful for him as his work in film.
“So my students, many of them are headed for some jobs,” he added as he looked back on his 31-year teaching journey.
Lee also joked about the recent controversy, saying, “Then they can’t fire me. Nyu can’t fire me.”
At the event, Lee was honored with a professional achievement award for his impactful work spanning more than four years.
Critics’ Choice Awards have also praised his films for reflecting on black life through his films such as You must have it, The school building, Do the right thing, Malcolm x, Blackclwansman and DA 5 blood.
The organization also highlighted Lee’s documentary work, including 4 little girlswhich earned an Academy Award nomination, and God willing and Da Creekand won two Emmys.
Lee, who recently received the Harvard Menis Menis Fellowship, has previously said that his personal legacy will be his family.
“The No. 1 legacy will be in my children,” he told them Mulesreferring to his son, 31, and daughter Jackson, 28, with wife Tonya Lewis Lee.
