Dick van Dyke has revealed why he refused to play the famous secret agent, James Bond.
Interview on NBC’s Today showGuest Al Roker asked, “Can you almost go back to James debs?”
The 99-year-old admitted that he approached the producer for the role.
He shared that Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli gave him the role of 007 after Sean’s departure from Sean.
Broccoli has previously worked with Hollywood legends on the musical Chitty Bang Bang in Chitty Bang Bhang – based on Ian’s children’s book.
“I almost did,” Van Dyke recalled.
“Cabbby came up to me and said, ‘Would you like to hook up?’
The actor told the host he was quickly fired, joking: “I said to myself, ‘Did you hear my British accent?’
Van Dyke admitted that the role would ‘be a great experience’.
However, he wasn’t sure if Mary Poppins and the chitty fans would ‘accept’ him in that character.
In retrospect, van Dyke has no regrets.
He calls it the missed opportunity of ‘The Doorway’ of his long and influential career.
Van Dyke turns 100 on December 13.
